What are Metadata (EXIF) and why remove them?

When you take a photo with a camera or smartphone, the image file also includes some extra information, called metadata or EXIF data.

This information can include:

  • Where the photo was taken (GPS location)
  • When it was taken (date and time)
  • The device used (camera or phone model)
  • The author’s name
  • Camera settings (like exposure, ISO, etc.)
  • A small preview of the image (thumbnail)
  • The image’s color profile (to show correct colors)

These details aren’t visible in the image itself, but they increase the file size, which can make your website load more slowly.

What the Image Optimizer Plugin Does

Our Image Optimizer plugin helps reduce image file sizes without changing how they look. One of its features is to remove unnecessary metadata to save space and improve website speed.

If you choose to remove metadata:

  • The following will be removed from the image:
    • EXIF data
    • File comments
    • Other technical data (like IPTC and XMP markers)

If you choose not to remove metadata:

  • All this extra information will remain in the image.

Important: The ICC color profile is never removed, because it helps keep the image colors accurate. Even if metadata removal is enabled, the color profile will always be preserved.

Where to Enable This Option

Go to: Image Optimizer > Optimize > Conversion
